Salem woman arrested after man's face slashed

Lee Co., Al.
A 52-year-old Salem man needed nearly 20 stitches to close a three-and-a-half-inch cut to the left side of his face after his common law wife allegedly assaulted him in their home Monday.
Rosie Ann Ogletree, 32, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree domestic violence in connection with the assault of Charlie Culpepper at their Lee Road 140 home, Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said in a release.
“According to deputies on the scene, there was extensive blood found throughout the home,” LCSO Chief Investigator Capt. Van Jackson said.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., the victim called 911, requesting an ambulance, Jackson said.
The incident appears to have stemmed from a verbal argument that began earlier in the day and escalated into a physical altercation, said Jackson, who added that deputies have received calls to the residence in the past.
A pocket knife believed to have been used in the assault was recovered by deputies, Jackson said. Another adult and teenager were present in the home at the time of the incident, but were not involved. Culpepper was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment and released.
In Alabama, a marriage is legally accepted as common law if the two parties have lived in the same household for an extended time as husband and wife and have made common purchases, Jackson said.
Ogletree was booked into the Lee County Detention Facility on Monday but released on Tuesday after posting a $5,000 bond. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Lee County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-522-7847.

Mobile County approves workplace health clinic for employees

MOBILE, Al.
The Mobile County Commission Monday approved a plan to open its own health clinic for employees.
Mobile County sealThe county has said that it will cost about $200,000 to renovate and furnish the clinic in its property off Azalea Road. The county will pay an additional $640,000 annually to Infirmary Health Medical Clinics PC to run the clinic.
The commission vote to approve the deal with Infirmary Health is subject to approval of the contract by the county’s legal staff.
Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the county, said that the attorneys were looking at small language issues and that the cost structure would not change.
Commission President Connie Hudson praised the staff for hammering out the deal, which has been in the works for about two years.
County officials say the clinic will save money on insurance payments. While insurance costs can vary from year to year based on the number of visits, the county’s arrangement with Infirmary Health is based largely on a flat-rate structure, according to the county.
Additionally, because the clinic will be married with a wellness program, the county believes it will help prevent chronic diseases that drive up health care spending.
In order to encourage employees to participate, the clinic will be available to them without a co-pay.
Such workplace health clinics have become increasingly popular for large employers in recent years. WellNow, which also submitted a proposal to the county, recently signed a deal with Continental Motors at the Brookley Aeroplex, said Clint Jones, WellNow’s vice president.

Convenience store owner denies embezzling more than $350,000 from WIC program

MOBILE, Al.
A local convenience store owner pleaded not guilty last week to charges that he embezzled more than $350,000 worth of government funds used to pay for milk, baby formula and other products for low-income pregnant women and young children.
Jamil Jamal Kayed, who lives in Mobile, faces a maximum of 5 years in prison if convicted of theft of public money.
Authorities allege that from January 2007 to December 2010, Kayed abused the Women, Infant and Children program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Authorities contend that Kayed traded cash for WIC vouchers for less than the face value and then turned them in for the full amount. He illegally collected $351,163, the indictment alleges.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Cassady set Kayed’s trial for March, and allowed him to remain out of jail pending trial.
Douglas Dunning, an attorney for Kayed, said it was too early to comment on the facts of the case.
"It’s just an allegation, at this stage," he said. "At this stage, all we have is the indictment."
