BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A 30-year-old Birmingham man has been charged with two counts of manslaughter in a Saturday night crash that killed a brother and sister, Birmingham police announced today.
Willie Turner is being held on bonds totaling $120,000 in the crash, police said.
Those killed were Keothus Carlisle Jr., 63, and his sister, Cynthia Foster Womack, 58, said Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.
The crash happened about 11 p.m. on Interstate 20/59 North near Arkadelphia Road.
Authorities said the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. Turner, the driver of the Tahoe and the lone occupant of the vehicle, lost control, crossed the median, became airborne and then went into the northbound lanes.
The Tahoe, authorities said, landed on a 1998 Ford Escort. Womack, the driver of a Ford Escort, was taken to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Carlisle was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were from Fairfield.
Sgt. Johnny Williams said Turner was charged with manslaughter because police believed he was at fault in the crash.
"There are other factors that will come out. The investigator believed he had enough to get a warrant and he did," Williams said.
