Last mustard gas weapons at Anniston Army Depot taken to disposal site

ANNISTON, Alabama 
The last mustard gas projectiles stored at Anniston Army Depot have been taken to the chemical weapons disposal facility there.
Mike Abrams, public affairs officer for the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility, told the Anniston Star that 72 105-mm projectiles, each 15.7 inches long, weighing 33 pounds and holding nearly a half gallon of mustard gas were moved out on Thursday.
Abrams says the projectiles have been put in line to be disassembled by robotic equipment. He says the mustard gas will be put in a furnace and metallic parts will be cleaned and recycled.
Lt. Col. Willie J. Flucker, Anniston Chemical Activity commander, says neither Anniston Chemical Activity nor Anniston Army Depot employees are storing nerve agent or mustard agent munitions for the first time in 48 years.
