ATMORE, Alabama -- A one-car accident early Monday claimed the lives of three people and critically injured a fourth, according to authorities.
The wreck occurred about 2:09 a.m. in Atmore when the speeding car went out of control and struck two pine trees, according to Escambia County Medical Examiner Dr. J. Daniel Raulerson.
Jeremy Duane McNeil, 25, and Coby J. Smith, 14, both of Atmore, along with 17-year-old Ricky Herrera of Bay Minette, were pronounced dead at the scene about 2:15 a.m., Raulerson said.
Leonardo Cuenca Jr., 18, was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, according to a news release from the Atmore Police Department. He remained in critical condition Tuesday, police said.
McNeil was driving a silver 2006 Pontiac G6, which crashed on Brookwood Drive, police said. Herrera and Smith were both back-seat passengers. Cuenca, who was riding in the front seat, was the only person wearing a seat belt, police said.
The initial investigation indicated that McNeil was apparently traveling west on Brookwood Drive when he lost control while crossing over railroad tracks. The car left the roadway and struck the trees, police said.
It is unclear if weather conditions may have played a role in the accident, Raulerson said. It will take several weeks for tests for drugs and alcohol to come back from the state forensic sciences lab, he said.
The accident remains under investigation by Atmore Police Department with the assistance of the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
