Columbiana man charged with attempted murder, theft after Monday night pursuit

SHELBY COUNTY, Al. 
A 38-year-old Columbiana man today was charged with theft, resisting arrest and attempted murder after the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said he tried to run over a deputy during a Monday evening chase. Michael Landon Sheffield is being held on bonds totaling $515,500.
The incident happened after dispatchers received a report of a suspicious person on property on Alston Farm Road, just outside of Columbiana, shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.

Deputies arrived in the area and, with the help of a local resident, encountered the suspect in a vehicle.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect attempted to run over a deputy and the deputy fired his weapon.
The suspect continued a short distance before crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot. The suspect was found in the woods nearby and apprehended without further incident.
A search of the suspect's vehicle revealed possible stolen property from the area.
The deputy was not injured and Sheffield refused medical treatment for minor injuries related to the crash.
