The swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Montgomery City Council took an unexpected turn of events when Mayor Todd Strange introduced a motion to revoke the business license for the Island Lounge where eleven people were shot Oct. 30.
"Since the procedures of removing business licenses takes so long, I wanted to start the process as quickly as possible," Strange said. The council suspended the rules in order to vote on the ordinance immediately, and voted unanimously in favor of revoking the license.
This came after Strange's address, which followed the swearing-in ceremony, in which he discussed the city's goal of being a safe place to call home.
"Even despite some recent actions of some thugs, we as a city are safe," Strange said.
Montgomery's City Clerk Brenda Blalock said since the ordinance has been passed, the next step is to allow the owners of the business to address why their license should not be revoked. She said the show cause hearing will be at the Dec. 6 city council meeting at 5 p.m.
The Island Lounge was operating without an alcohol license at the time of the shooting, and the ABC has ruled that the owner, 39-year-old Tapango Marie Williams, not be able to buy an alcohol license.
The Island Lounge was the scene of the fourth shooting incident between feuding Montgomery rap groups Fam Bois and Crescent Road Heroz. Four people have died in the shootings and 19 others have been injured.
Gregory Earl Blue, 16, has been charged with two counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with the Island Lounge shooting. He is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on no bond.
Eleven suspects have been arrested in connection with the other three shooting incidents.
