Traffic, weather lead to numerous highway accidents

MONTGOMERY, Al.
Several factors have led to numerous accidents this afternoon across the state, including holiday traffic, post-Iron Bowl traffic and heavy rain situations across much of the state.
A representative with the Alabama Department of Public safety said there have been no road closures due to the weather, but accidents on the interstates and roadways have caused slow-going traffic in those areas.
As of 4:30 p.m., there were no fatalities reported to the Montgomery, Birmingham or Huntsville State Trooper Posts, while there have been several cases of minor injuries.
Traffic was particularly snarled north of the I-85/I-65 exchange in Montgomery. In one instance, a car left the roadway and slid down a 20-foot embankment. That accident is almost cleared.
An accident near I-65 exit 183 had troopers and a fire truck slowing traffic down. Multiple accidents near exit 186 on I-65 had northbound traffic backed up three miles at one point, while another accident southbound snarled southbound lanes.
There's additional slow-moving traffic near the Autauga-Chilton County line on I-65. Near Birmingham, traffic is slow around accidents on 459 and I-20.
The Huntsville State Trooper post reports there have been several minor accidents in the area, which is keeping drivers at a slow pace.
Heavy rainfall will remain a factor for much of the state through the evening hours, the National Weather Service said. Areas east of the I-65 corridor should get the heaviest amounts.
