A family business that got its start as a roadside stand for selling peanuts, pecans and produce and for a generation had been known for outfitting area churches and homes with decorative glass went up in flames Wednesday.
Firefighters from surrounding communities battled the blaze for hours, but in the end Adams Glass Studio on Highway 231 south of Troy was a complete loss.
Firefighters spent most of the day on site and at times the highway had to be closed to traffic. Owner Charles Adams was inside the studio when the fire started Wednesday morning, but he made it out safely.
Very few people in Pike County over the age of 40 don't have memories of Adams Nut Shop, as the business was known when it was founded by Sam Adams, the current owner's father.
All the patterns and designs that were the signature of Adams Glass Studio are gone, but Charles Adams said he hopes to restore the company to a glassworks operation.
