It's official: Alabama vs. LSU in BCS Championship "Game of the Century"
#1 vs # 2
TUSCALOOSA, Al.
Alabama will play LSU in the BCS Championship Game on Jan. 9 in at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
Many sportscasters have dubbed the rematch of the top two teams the "Game of the Century"
Pieces of the BCS puzzle trickled across the internet throughout Sunday, but the official announcement came moments ago.
The Crimson Tide sat idle Saturday, but firmly gripped the No. 2 spot in the BCS standings entering the final weekend of the regular season. That helped fight off a strong push from Oklahoma State.
"Our players and everyone associated with our program are very excited about the opportunity to play in the national championship game," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. "We are very appreciative of the chance to play an LSU team that we have tremendous respect for and we are looking forward to the challenge."
LSU won the SEC Championship game with a 42-10 victory over Georgia on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (13-0) have won 14 straight dating back to last season. LSU returns to the national championship game for the first time since winning the 2007 title.
Alabama (11-1) suffered its lone defeat to LSU, 9-6 in overtime on Nov. 5 in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Tide only dropped to No. 3 in the BCS standings following the loss. And once a number of other teams lost games, Alabama climbed to No. 2 where it stayed the past two weeks.
The Tide returns to the championship game for the first time since winning it in 2009 with a 37-21 win over Texas.
