Rolling meth lab busted in Opp

 Opp, Al.
An Opp man was arrested Tuesday after police allegedly found a “rolling meth lab” inside his vehicle.
Lt. Mark Kyser with the Opp Police Department initially stopped 33-year-old Christopher Davis for a traffic violation on Barton Street; however, a search of the car uncovered all the necessary ingredients for a mobile methamphetamine lab, said Drug Task Force Commander Mark Odom.
“Although he works criminal investigations in Opp, Lt. Kyser continues to keep a keen eye out when it comes to narcotics,” Odom said. “Prior to the vehicle being towed, he conducted an inventory search and located numerous items used in making meth.
“Once DTF agents arrived, they recovered a smoke device which contained meth, as well as muratic acid, an amount of ephedrine, coffee filters and cold packs – all of which are used to manufacture methamphetamine.”
Davis was charged with second-degree manufacturing of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Covington County Jail and held under a $320,000 bond; however, he remains incarcerated without bond on a failure to appear warrant from Opp.

Photo evidence shows Toomer's oaks not as old as originally thought

AUBURN, Al.
The Toomer's oaks website, where the Trees Task Force has been updating the status of the poisoned trees posted new information this week saying the trees may not be as old as originally thought.
The live oaks had been believed to be around 130 years old, but a report that surveyed multiple photos from various sources indicates they actually may be somewhere around 70 years old.
The trees were poisoned with Spike 80 DF late in 2010, and have been losing foliage since. Auburn officials and fans have worried over the fate of the iconic tress, which have been a site of celebrations - over football wins and other victories - for decades.
According to the update on the trees, a group of Auburn faithful conducted research after seeing some older photos and believe the oaks were planted between 1937 and 1939, but most likely in 1937.

An iconic photo from "Auburn, A Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village" by Mickey Logue and Jack Sims, which is believed to have been taken in 1899, shows a tree at the corner.
"The large tree in the center of this photo is not likely a live oak. Even if it was a Live Oak, it's too close to the corner to be one of the current Toomer's Oaks, and recent research has revealed that this tree is not present in later photographs," according to the report.
The report goes on to include several photos showing that the corner had been graced by large trees throughout its history until 1937. A photo donated to the university by George E. McWhorter Jr. taken on Jan. 9, 1937, shows the corner seemingly bare of large trees.
A photo taken a year later, after Auburn's win against Michigan State in the Orange Bowl, shows very young trees at the corner.
"... It is unlikely the trees were planted at different times. This young tree is about 8 to 12 feet tall and would be 6 to 10 years old, depending upon how it was grown. Aged oaks are definitely not present," the report says.
Someone using the name Al from Dadeville called the Paul Finebaum show to confess to the crime, and Harvey Updyke was charged with two counts of criminal mischief, two counts of desecrating a venerable object, and two counts of a state law that includes making it unlawful to damage, vandalize, or steal any property on or from an animal or crop facility. In November, Updyke's lawyer requested a change of venue to Birmingham.

Human remains discovered behind home; bones from abandoned cemetery surface in adjacent yard

MOBILE, Al.
Human remains from an abandoned cemetery in Toulminville were discovered in a yard behind a house yesterday, Mobile police said.
There is no evidence that any criminal act was involved in the discovery, police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Levy said.
Police were called to a home on Osage Street after a woman discovered bones she suspected were human while cleaning out the backyard of the home. Police arrived and discovered more bones, he said.
It was determined that the remains came from a grave in a neglected cemetery that abuts the property, and that the bones had come up through the ground over time. Levy said that residents told police that no one watches or takes care of the cemetery.
Once it was determined that there was no criminal act involved, Levy said that the scene was turned over to other city officials to determine what to do with the remains.

The 17 people arrested Wednesday were found at their homes or other locations.
“We’ll continue to look for the other ones,” Lowery said. “They’re on notice already that we’re looking for them. Some of them will do the right thing and turn themselves in and some will try to hide even deeper, but eventually, they’ll make their way to the Bay Minette jail.”
During the sweep, officers seized crack cocaine, marijuana and prescription medications, according to a Thursday statement from the Sheriff’s Office. Officers also found a gun in a residence where several convicted felons were living.

Those arrested on outstanding warrants as part of the roundup included: Ray Charles Knight, assault; John Finley, parole violation; Manquez D. Adams, who was also charged with possession of a controlled substance; and Gerald Prim on a warrant for negotiating a worthless instrument. Richard Jones was arrested on a warrant from Escambia County. Fla., while Tyson G. Heard was arrested on a police warrant from Foley.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force includes officers assigned from the Bay Minette, Loxley, Foley, and Gulf Shores police departments as well as the District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Marshal’s Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. Pizza delivery person robbed/Police need your help

Dothan, Al.
On January 4, 2011 the Dothan Police Department responded to a robbery at the intersection of State Avenue and Basin Street. Upon arrival, police learned the victim was delivering a pizza to a residence in the 700 block of State Avenue.  The instructions with the order said for the driver to call when she got there, which is what she did. She said the person who answered told her she just passed him, and he would be standing by the street.  She said she pulled up to a car on the side of the road, where five black males were standing.  She said she was met when she got out of her car by a very dark skinned black male, about 5’8 to 5’10 tall, stocky build, about 200 pounds with a full beard, but no mustache.  He was wearing a black jacket, and dark pants, and appeared to be approximately 20 years old.  Also present was a very slender black male, who looked to be about 16 years of age, very slender build, also wearing dark clothes.  She said the older male was counting money, so she handed the younger male the pizza.  While she did that the older male put his hand in pocket, and pointed towards her, as though he were holding a pistol pointed at her, inside his jacket.  He then told her to give him whatever money she had in her pockets and the victim complied.  She said the younger male then gave her back the pizza, and soda, and they both fled on foot towards the wood line at the end of Basin Street. Police are asking anyone with information about the case or identity of the suspect to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.
