MOBILE, Al.
Human remains from an abandoned cemetery in Toulminville were discovered in a yard behind a house yesterday, Mobile police said.
There is no evidence that any criminal act was involved in the discovery, police spokesman Cpl. Christopher Levy said.
Police were called to a home on Osage Street after a woman discovered bones she suspected were human while cleaning out the backyard of the home. Police arrived and discovered more bones, he said.
It was determined that the remains came from a grave in a neglected cemetery that abuts the property, and that the bones had come up through the ground over time. Levy said that residents told police that no one watches or takes care of the cemetery.
Once it was determined that there was no criminal act involved, Levy said that the scene was turned over to other city officials to determine what to do with the remains.
