2 Arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance

Nicholas Austin Rich, black male, 19 years of age, of Andrew Street was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with a $5,000 bond and Derell Bolden Drake, black male, 21 years of age, of Britt Lane was arrested and charged with Alteration of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with bonds totaling $7,500.

On January 31, 2012 the Dothan Police Department received information of narcotic activity. Patrolmen investigated the information and came into contact with two suspects, Nicholas Rich and Derell Drake. Narcotics investigators were called to the scene after patrolmen discovered the suspects were in possession of cocaine. In addition to narcotics, police also recovered an altered firearm from Drake. Both suspects were arrested and transported, after which investigators obtained felony warrants on February 1, 2012 bringing the investigation to a close.

22 arrested in Selma on crack cocaine charges, authorities seek 6 others

SELMA, Al.
Federal officials say 22 people have been arrested in Selma on charges of selling crack cocaine and officers are looking for six others.
The 28 were indicted Wednesday by federal grand juries following a four-month investigation by federal and local authorities that included officers buying crack cocaine in Selma neighbors.
U.S. Attorney Kenyon Brown said no officers or suspects were injured in the roundup.
Officials said all the suspects are from Selma and all face charges of intent to distribute crack cocaine.
Police Chief William Riley said he has worked with federal authorities to clean up drug problems since arriving in Selma about three years ago.

Shelby County deputies arrest Harpersville man after finding meth lab in vehicle

A 33-year-old Harpersville man was arrested on charges of first degree unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after members of Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force found a methemphetamine lab inside a vehicle, the sheriff's office said today.

Joshua Alan Cannon was taken into custody Tuesday after deputies pulled him over in Harpersville, found items thought to be used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, and called members of the drug task force to the scene, the sheriff's office said.
Cannon is in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $101,000 that are related to the drug charges.
The task force is made of officers from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Alabaster Police Department, Pelham Police Department, Harpersville Police Department, Helena Police Department, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, and the Alabama National Guard Counter Drug Program.
Lt. Kevin Turner, of the sheriff's office, is commander of the task force. He said the deputies' partnership with the task force and the training deputies received on spotting items used to make meth kept "this individual (Cannon) from endangering the citizens of Shelby County by distributing or consuming his product."

17 years old charged in Birmingham quintuple homicide

BIRMINGHAM, Al.
A 17-year-old Birmingham high school student is charged with five counts of capital murder in a weekend massacre in Ensley Highlands that left five people dead.

Rashad Stoves, a junior at Wenonah High, is also charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and attempted murder in two unrelated cases, Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. said. Stoves, of Dolomite, is being held without bond in the five capital cases. His bond is set at $1 million in separate charges.
He is charged in the deaths of Ronnie Render, 42, Charles Render, 21, Jonathan Sanchez, 23, Demetrius Sanford, 19 and Jeffrey Davis Jr., 23.
Stoves and two other men were arrested Sunday night. One of the other men was released; the other was charged in an unrelated robbery. Police said neither would be charged at this time in the multiple slaying.
The shootings happened about 3:30 a.m. Sunday at a home at 3113 Avenue S.
Four of the men were shot execution-style. The fifth, Sanford, pulled up on the scene as it was unfolding and was dragged out of his car and into the home where he was fatally shot. Police have not released a motive in the slaying.
In a prepared statement released at 10 p.m., police Chief A.C. Roper said, "We are pleased to have this first suspect charged, and members of the department continue to work diligently to identify every single individual involved in this horrific crime."

Man dies of injuries after being shot by Headland police officer

HEADLAND, Al.
Authorities say a 33-year-old Headland man has died from his injuries after a confrontation with police in Headland.
Two Headland police officers also suffered minor injuries Tuesday morning.
Reports state police had been summoned to help paramedics get the man to a hospital.
Henry County Coroner Derek Wright said Opatrick Fitzgerald Humphrey died about 3:35 p.m. at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Wright said Humphrey suffered two gunshot wounds, one that grazed his chest and a fatal wound to the abdomen.
Headland Police Chief Mark Jones said the shooting happened after police responded to a medical call around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Jones said the suspect was combative and repeatedly charged toward an officer, and was shot.
Jones stated : “He snatched the car door open and started pulling the officer out of the car. The officer was able to pull his weapon and fire one shot.”

When the second officer arrived, he heard the gun shot and saw another officer lying on the ground. That’s when he fired his weapon, Jones said.

Opelika police find more remains near site where child's skull found

OPELIKA, Al.
More remains have been found near where a child's skull and unidentified remains were found Saturday and Monday.
According to a release from the Opelika Police Department, approximately 20 officers and investigators of the Opelika Police Department, Auburn Police Department and Lee County Sheriff's Office went back to the area of 1700 Hurst Street to continue the investigation earlier today.
Officers conducted a grid search of a thick area of trees and underbrush located on the northern edge of the Brook Haven Trailer Park. During the search officers found what they believe to be human skeletal remains in the wooded area.
The remains will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for analysis. It is unknown whether the remains found today are related to the skull found earlier.
Capt. Bruce DeLong said officers were unsure if the remains found Monday were human or animal, and that testing could take a while.
The location of both the skull and remains is near Rosemere Cemetery, but DeLong said it is not clear if there could be a connection.

Mobile police searching for assailant in hotel room sexual assault

MOBILE, Al.
Police are searching for a man who they allege sexually assaulted a woman in her hotel room, officials said  in a Tuesday news release.
Police were called at 11:30 p.m. Monday to the 5400 block of Inn Road for the assault to a 19-year-old female victim.
The assailant is described as a black male about 6 feet 3 inches tall with a muscular build, about 47 years old, with slicked-back black and gray hair. Police said the assailant is believed to be driving an older model white Cadillac.
