Shooting at Tuscaloosa apartment complex leaves man dead

New Story:

Tuscaloosa police investigators are still looking for answers in the shooting death of Johnson, 25, who died early Sunday morning after being struck by a bullet in the parking lot of Sterling Crimson Apartments on 17th street.
Gunfire at a nearby convenience store around the same time as the murder led to an arrest of Ricky Crooks, 20, who was charged with attempted murder for firing shots at another individual. Investigators are trying to determine if the two incidents are related.Johnson was a graduate student at the University of Alabama, majoring in Operations Management in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. He will receive his master’s degree posthumously in December.
Eufaula High football coach Dan Klages said Johnson was a stellar student and athlete. However, Klages said his attributes went far beyond academics and athletics.
“I have done this 27 years, and I have never coached a better kid than Trey,” Klages said. “If you ran into him in the hall or on the field, he always smiled and you always felt better after having a conversation with him. Even after he graduated, he always kept in touch with us, would come by to visit us and wish us luck. He just had the greatest demeanor. He was always upbeat, never spiteful or hateful.”
His father said Trey was soft-hearted, the kind of person who caught a catfish one day at a nearby pond and placed it in an aquarium. The fish was too big for the aquarium, and when his dad suggested tossing the fish outside, Trey bristled.
“He said ‘No, dad, that wouldn’t be right’, and we took it all the way back to the pond and set it loose,” Johnson said.
Visitation for Trey will be at the Holman-Headland Mortuary chapel in Headland from 4 until 7 p.m. tonight. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in the Newville Cemetery.
