Alabama House Majority Leader Micky Hammon, R-Decatur, fired back this afternoon at U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Birmingham, over her criticism this morning of the state's new immigration law.

In a statement, Hammon, who sponsored and led the passage of the bill, said if Sewell has issues with Alabama's new statute, she should force her Democrat colleagues in Congress to begin addressing the immigration issue on the federal level so states will not be forced to take action.
"Rather than spending her time talking and criticizing Alabama's immigration statute, Congresswoman Sewell would better serve her constituents by taking action on the federal level to stem the tide of illegals flooding our state," Hammon said in a statement. "Just like President (Barack) Obama talks about jobs but has done nothing to successfully create them, Congresswoman Sewell is talking about the illegal immigration issue but doing nothing to solve the problem."
Hammon said states such as Alabama, Arizona, Georgia and others are passing their own statutes to deal with illegal immigration because of the federal government's failure to do enough to protect the nation's borders.
He also urged Sewell to consider the threat illegal immigration may pose to Homeland Security and suggested that she was more interested in partisan politics than protecting in border security.
"Having a subculture of hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants living off the grid and under the radar threatens our national security and our ability to protect legal citizens from harm," Hammon said.
"Alabama's statute does not just apply to Hispanics jumping the border in order to look for jobs; it applies to illegal immigrants of all nationalities from every region of the world, including those who come here with the intent to inflict harm upon American citizens."
