A 27-year-old Valley man was found dead at the scene of a residential fire early Thursday morning after emergency responders had controlled the blaze, according to the Valley Police Department.
The Valley Police Department and the East Alabama Fire Department responded to the house fire in the 1500 block of 55th Street at about 5 a.m. The residence was fully ablaze upon arrival, but responders managed to control the fire and prevent it from reaching nearby homes.
When responders entered the home’s front bedroom, they found the body of Marcoleus Quintez Copeland, the residence’s lone occupant at the time. Copeland’s body was scheduled to be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Montgomery for an autopsy later Thursday.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the blaze likely began in the kitchen before spreading to the rest of the residence. The case remains under investigation by the Valley Police Department, the Chambers County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office.
