National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Huntsville reported that storm assessment teams had confirmed damage in 10 Alabama counties was due to seven tornadoes on Friday.Meanwhile, the name of the Alabama man killed in last week's tornadoes was released Sunday by the Tallapoosa County's coroner.
Todd Hodge, 57, was killed when his manufactured home in the Eagle Creek area of Tallapoosa County was destroyed by a tornado on Friday, Tallapoosa County Coroner Mike Knox said today.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a report Sunday confirming that the damage caused in the Eagle Creek area of Tallapoosa County was caused by an EF-2 tornado, with peak winds at 125 mph. Besides killing Hodge, two others also were injured in that storm as the tornado spun a 31-mile path through Tallapoosa and Chambers counties between 10:40 p.m. and 11:14 p.m. Friday, according to the weather service report.
That tornado also damaged about 20 homes, including destroying a half-dozen manufactured homes in its path.
The weather service in Huntsville also gave a preliminary report that the damage reported to homes, a prison and a school in Limestone and Madison counties on Friday was caused by three tornadoes. The tornadoes were rated EF-1, EF2, and EF-3 with wind ranging from 100 mph to 140 mph, according to the weather service in Huntsville.
The other tornadoes confirmed by weather service officials from the Birmingham area office were:
- An EF-1 tornado struck Lowndes County and stayed on the ground 17.7 miles and cut a path as wide as 400 yards.
- An EF 1 tornado stayed on the ground 19.2 miles through parts of Perry, Dallas and Autauga counties with a path as wide as 750 yards.
- An EF-2 tornado cut a path as wide as 700 yards for 28 miles through Chilton and Coosa counties.
