9 homes damaged in Montgomery's Sunshine Village park

MONTGOMERY, Al.
Nine homes in the Sunshine Village trailer park were badly damaged as a result of strong storm that passed through the Wares Ferry/ Eastern Boulevard area around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

No one was injured in the mobile home park, nor in the several other areas of Montgomery that sustained damage and power outages.

Several of the homes' windows had been blown out and many of the neighborhood's trees had fallen into the road or toppled onto homes. Many Sunshine Village residents were out surveying damages after the storm.

Sunshine Village resident Alicia Mendez said that she and her young two sons were at their home when the storm hit.

"The furniture on our patio started to move so I knew it was time to take cover," she said. "I was surprised that our house wasn't blown away because the winds were so scary. I'm pretty sure I heard hail on our rooftop and branches from trees kept hitting the windows."

Lt. D.L. Crenshaw of the Montgomery Fire Department said that there were no injuries at the mobile home park.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said we (Montgomery) "dodged a bullet" today by avoiding much of the brunt of the storm.

It is unclear if the damage was caused by a tornado or by straight line winds, but the National Weather Service is expected to make that distinction sometime this afternoon.

Amber Acker, an employee of a nearby interior design company, said she was in her office safe place when the worst part of the storm passed over. The walls in the metal building, she said, made popping sounds for10 minutes,  from what she concluded was the building expanding from the pressure of the storm.

"The noise from the storm was multiplied by the metal exterior of the building," she said. "Once the power went out, it was defiantly an intense experience waiting out the storm."

The building she works in was not damaged but she said other nearby offices were damaged as well as several cars parked nearby.
