BIRMINGHAM, Al.
A former Tuscaloosa, Ala., sheriff's sergeant has pleaded guilty in federal court in Birmingham to charges she wrongfully used a Taser three times over a four-month period in 2008.
The U.S. Department of Justice said 52-year-old Althea Mallisham entered the plea on Wednesday to three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon while acting under color of law.
Mallisham admitted that on three separate occasions while she was on duty, she used an X26 Taser to shock pretrial detainees as a means of punishment.
In each instance, the detainee was either restrained in handcuffs or locked in a jail cell.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 15. Mallisham faces up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for each count.
