Opelika, AL.
Additional skeletal remains were found by investigators with the Opelika Police Department on Monday in an Opelika trailer park where a human skull was discovered over the weekend, OPD Capt. Bruce DeLong said.
Police were back on the scene of the Brook Haven Trailer Park in Opelika on Monday stringing police tape around an area where what is believed to be the skull of a child between the ages of 5 and 7 was found on Saturday.
Investigators found the additional remains approximately 100 yards from where the skull was located Saturday in the 1700 block of Hurst Street.
Yvonne Johnson recalls when her adult son made the grisly discovery in her backyard Saturday morning after stopping to check in on her. Johnson’s son found the remains while picking up pecans that had fallen from a number of trees around her trailer.
“He said, “You know, you have something that looks like a skull, and it may be human,” said Johnson, 58. “I looked outside the window and you could see it real good.”
Johnson says she immediately called in the information to authorities. The skull found was confirmed to be human, according to an OPD release.
While she’s says she’s gotten used to dealing with her share of deaths over the years, the fact that the found remains could be those of a child struck a chord with her.
“Somebody has to wondering and worried about his,” Johnson said. “Somebody needs closure on this. But somebody is walking around with a conscience and God is going to deal with them.”
There are currently no reports of missing children in Opelika, DeLong said.
“We don’t have anything here, but we’re checking with all local, regional and statewide agencies,” DeLong said.
The newly discovered remains will be sent along with the skull found Saturday to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for analysis, DeLong said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at 334-705-5220, Opelika Police Communications at 334-705-5263 or the Secret Witness Hotline at 334-745-8665. The Opelika Police Department and the Lee County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
