WELLBORN, Alabama
Authorities say a man died after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a Wellborn home and then engulfed the structure.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown tells the Annison Star that 42-year-old Dexter McAllister was pronounced dead at the scene of the early Sunday morning blaze.
Assistant Fire Chief Tony Taylor said the fire originated in the kitchen, and an initial investigation showed that cooking oil had overheated.
Taylor said McAllister died when he apparently returned to the kitchen, where he was overcome by heat and smoke. Authorities say the blaze appears to have been accidental.
A second person who was inside the home survived the blaze, and was treated at a local hospital. That person's name was unavailable.
