Alabama ghost town seen as tourist attraction

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP)
A nonprofit foundation has given the state 27 acres of land in Alabama's first capital, Old Cahawba, near Selma.
Members of the Cahaba Foundation made the presentation to the Alabama Historical Commission Tuesday at the Capitol in Montgomery.
Foundation President Daniel Meador said the group has raised about $600,000 in gifts and pledges and is trying to raise a total of $2 million. He said the state currently owns about 65 percent of the nearly 1,000 acres in Old Cahawba, and the $2 million would allow the foundation to acquire the remaining property for donation to the state.
Old Cahawba served as Alabama's capital from 1820 to 1826, when state government moved to Tuscaloosa. Commission officials said they envision the first capital attracting more tourists for history and recreation.
