COLUMBIANA, Al.
St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor has been appointed the special prosecutor in the sexual abuse cases against retired Shelby County teacher Daniel M. Acker Jr.

District Attorney Richard Minor
Acker was arrested last week after police said he confessed to molesting more than 20 girls during his career as a fourth-grade teacher in Shelby County schools. Two of his alleged victims have accused him of touching them inappropriately when they were his students.

Acker is being held in the Shelby County Jail on four child sexual abuse charges that carry a total bond of $545,000.

Minor has been the district attorney in St. Clair County since 2005. He confirmed his appointment to the Acker case this morning.

Shelby County District Attorney Robby Owens had asked Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange to appoint a special prosecutor because Acker's father is a longtime Shelby County commissioner.
