A juvenile drowned in the rough Gulf of Mexico surf at a Fort Morgan Peninsula resort late this afternoon, authorities said.
The identity of the person who drowned was not immediately released.
According to a release from Maj. Anthony Lowery of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, the youth and another juvenile were swept out into the Gulf at The Beach Club, which is about 9 miles east of Fort Morgan.
Lowery said the mother attempted a rescue and was also swept out before she and one of the juveniles were rescued. The U.S. Coast Guard and BCSO were called to investigate, he said.
The U.S. Coast Guard about 7:30 p.m. called off the search for the missing person. Seas and surf along the Gulf side of the peninsula have been unusually rough all weekend due to the landfall of Tropical Storm Lee.
