DEMOPOLIS, Al.
Hager Young, formerly the oldest person in Alabama, died Friday morning in Demopolis, according to reports.

Young was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the 12th oldest person in the world on Oct. 11, her birthday.

WTOK in Meridian produced a two-part special report on Young that began on Thanksgiving Day, the day before she died. Young suffered a small stroke after her birthday, according to the report. She was a widowed mother of seven.

The Times and WTOK reported Young's age as 115 and her date of birth as October 11, 1896.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, an organization that tracks supercentarians (people who have reached the age of 110) across the world, the 1900 US Census lists Young as being born in October 1898.

The group uses Oct. 11, 1898, as her date of birth and listed her age as 113 years and 45 days at the time of her death.

Ms. Young's funeral was today at Petty Memorial A.M.E. Church in Demopolis.
