Bayou La Batre police check sex offender's residency status, discover meth lab

BAYOU LA BATRE, Al.
Bayou La Batre police arrested six people on drug charges after an inquiry into a convicted sex offender’s whereabouts led to the discovery of a methamphetamine lab, officials said Friday.

About 8 p.m. Thursday, police went to residence in the 7700 block of County Road in Coden "following up on information that Anthony Higgins Jr. may be staying at that residence," Cpl. Corey Finch said.
Higgins was arrested in 1998 and convicted of sexual abuse charges, according to Mobile County Metro Jail records.
When the residents opened the door, officers saw materials for making methamphetamine, Detective Scott Dagg said.
Police arrested Higgins, Amy Nelson -- whom police identified as Higgins’ girlfriend -- Thricia Gollott and Luther Stewart.
Thomas Bennett and Clinton Zirlott, who drove up to the house while police were there, also were arrested.
Higgins, 44; Nelson, 27 of Theodore; Gollott, 23, of Irvington and Stewart, 51, of Grand Bay each were charged with second-degree manufacturing a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. All four remained in Metro Jail late Friday, with a total bail for both charges set at $8,000, records showed.
Bennett, 37, of Mobile was charged with possession of a controlled substance, first-degree marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bennett was released about 2:30 a.m. Friday, with a total bail set at $5,500, records showed.
Zirlott, 38, of Bayou La Batre was charged with second-degree marijuana possession and possession of a controlled substance. He remained jailed late Friday with a total bail for the two charges set at $3,500, records showed.
