Alabama governor adds extra days off at Christmas, Thanksgiving for state workers

MONTGOMERY, Al.
Alabama's governor is giving state employees an extra two days off around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Gov. Robert Bentley announced Monday that state government offices will be closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 25. They will also be closed the Friday before Christmas, which is Dec. 23. Alabama law gives state employees Thanksgiving and Christmas off, but governors often add an extra day or two like Bentley has done this year.
The governor said it's his way of telling state employees that he appreciates the sacrifices they have made during challenging economic times for the state.
The announcement means most state offices will be closed four days for Christmas. That's because Christmas falls on a Sunday, and the holiday will be observed on Monday, Dec. 26.
