2 shootings keep Birmingham police busy, 1 fatal, one possibly life-threatening

BIRMINGHAM, Al.
Birmingham police tonight are investigating two shootings, including one that left a man dead and another that left an 18-year-old woman with possibly life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Scott Thurmond said the first shooting was reported about 4 p.m. in the 300 block of Third Avenue Southwest. A man was found inside a car, shot multiple times. It appeared the man had been in the car for a day or two, Thurmond said. No arrests have been made in that case.
Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Chris Moore identified the man as 33-year-old Demetrice Davis.
About 5:45 p.m., police were called to a home in the 1200 block of Rose Lynn Lane in the Huffman neighborhood on a report that an 18-year-old woman had been shot.
Thurmond said the woman's injuries were possibly life-threatening. Police took her 20-year-old brother in for questioning.
According to neighbors the shooting was likely accidental, but Thurmond said the investigation was ongoing. "We're on the fence," Thurmond said. "It may be an accident, it may not be."
Michael Spahn, who lives next door to the house where the shooting happened, said he was at home when some children ran over and said the woman had been shot. Spahn said it appeared the woman had been shot in the face.
He said he has known the family for about 15 years and he had often watched over the children while their mother worked. Spahn said he believed the shooting was an accident. "The kids argue a lot, but they never hurt each other. I doubt they've ever put a hand on each other," he said.
