The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department responded to a report of a house fire located at 6105 Waringwood Drive South in the early morning of Tuesday, November 1, according to a release from Public Information Officer Steve Huffman.
Fire dispatchers received the initial call around 4:22 a.m. The release said that when firefighters arrived on the scene they reported smoke and fire coming out the front door and window of the single story, wood frame residence but that the firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
The release says that after the fire was extinguished, a 14-year-old male resident of the home approached firemedics and told them he jumped out of a window and hurt his back. Firemedics transported him to a nearby hospital for further assessment and treatment. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening, according to the release.
It continues:
"The owner/occupant told fire investigators that he, his wife and son were asleep when the smoke alarm awoke him up. He went to investigate the reason and discovered a small fire on the sofa in the living room. He went and grabbed a garden hose and attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful and had to escape. His wife and son were forced to escape out a window by the heat traveling down the hallway."
The release says the fire appears to have originated in the living room near the sofa; there are varying degrees of smoke and heat damage throughout the structure. It says the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time but appears to have been unintentional. Damage is estimated at around $10,000.
