State investigators were in the town Thursday to try to determine the fire’s cause.
Atmore fire crews and police responded to a 911 call to a house in the 100 block of First Street. The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, police said in a news release. The three children — reported to be ages 1 to 4 — were found inside.
WALA-TV Fox Channel 10 reported that the children’s grandmother identified them as Aniya Abner, 4; Takia Abner, 3; and Michael Coleman, 1.
The children were taken to Atmore Community Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Early in the investigation, Atmore Fire Chief Gerry McGhee said it appeared that the children were home alone, according to the Atmore Advance newspaper.
Firefighters were called to the one-story, wood-frame house about 7:45 p.m., Scott Pilgreen, assistant state fire marshal said Thursday.
Pilgreen said that two of the children were found in the hallway, and one was in a bedroom.
McGhee and other law enforcement authorities could not be reached for comment Thursday.
