Arrests lead to several solved burglaries, thefts

James Glenn Hammett

 Etowah County, Al.
A woman admitted she was high on methamphetamine when she and a friend broke into vehicles and houses. The arrest of the man and woman has cleared up several burglaries and thefts across Etowah and surrounding counties.
James Glenn Hammett, 32, Guntersville, and Amanda Renee Sims, 27, Albertville, were arrested Tuesday when Etowah County Deputy Justin Plunkett stopped the car they were in for not having a license plate, according to Sheriff Todd Entrekin.
They were stopped on Sligo Road, were acting suspiciously and could not explain to Plunkett why they were in the area. He called for sheriff’s office investigators, who were given consent to search the vehicle, Investigator Shane Hartley said.

Attalla Police Department Capt. Richard Cox and his K-9, Kori, also were called to assist in the investigation.
Inside the car, they found a laptop, pocket knife, two cameras and two Bibles from a burglary on Egypt Road.
Hammett admitted that he and Sims had just broken into the house on Egypt Road and they were taken into custody.
They have been charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree theft and illegal possession of a credit card, Hartley said.
Sims showed investigators the burglarized residence and told investigators they also had broken into a house on Gray Street in Gadsden, but she told them she could not remember exactly where vehicles on U.S. Highway 431 were located because she was high on meth.
Hammett also admitted breaking into the vehicles and a residence in Gadsden.
A GPS, credit card and Social Security card found in the vehicle have been confirmed stolen from Albertville and Calhoun County.
