Huntsville Utilities warns customers of potential scam involving meter readings

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Huntsville Utilities is warning its customers about a potential scam after two customers reported getting suspicious calls today.
Huntsville Utilities logo.jpgSpokesman Bill Yell said the customers both received a call from someone who claimed they were with Huntsville Utilities. The caller asked the customers if they were home so the utility department could come read their meters and collect payment for their bills.
"These calls are not originating from Huntsville Utilities," Yell said in an email. Both customers said the calls came up as "unknown" on their caller IDs.
"Huntsville Utilities has formal collections processes in place and does not call and ask customers if they are at home to collect past due bills," Yell said.
If Huntsville Utilities employees do go to a business or residence, they will have proper identification, Yell said. Huntsville Utilities is working with the authorities to investigate the apparent scam.
Huntsville Utilities encourages its customers to call 256-535-1200 if they receive a similar suspicious phone call.
