Auburn man faces charges after police find drugs in his shoe

Auburn, Al.
Auburn police arrested two men and seized crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $5,000 during a traffic stop on Tuesday.
John R. Welch, 59, and Terrance Story, 32, both of Auburn, were arrested at approximately 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Shug Jordan Parkway and Wire Road.
Police had spotted the vehicle Story was driving leaving a mobile home park and recognized him as a revoked driver, Auburn Police Division Chief Tommy Dawson said.
Welch, a passenger in the vehicle, was behaving suspiciously, and upon a search by the officer, was discovered to have approximately 46 grams of crack cocaine in a bag stuffed down the side of one of the rain boot-type shoes he was wearing, Dawson said. Welch also had a small quantity of marijuana in his shoe.
Welch has been charged with trafficking cocaine and second-degree possession of marijuana.
Story was arrested on failure to appear warrants from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Dawson said.
Both men were transported to the Lee County Detention Facility, where Welch is being held on a $31,000 bond.
“This is a good drug arrest, and we’re very pleased to get that amount of crack cocaine off the street,” Dawson said.
