Pedestrian struck, killed by Birmingham police car identified

BIRMINGHAM, Al.
A man fatally struck Wednesday night by a Birmingham police car has been identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Michael Hardy, 56, of Birmingham died at UAB Hospital, said deputy coroner Phillip Russell.

The incident happened as a South Precinct officer was driving on Sixth Avenue South to take a prisoner to the Birmingham City Jail about 5:30 p.m.

As the marked patrol car reached the Beta Street intersection, Hardy walked in front of the police car, Sgt. Johnny Williams said Wednesday.

The department's Internal Affairs division and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident.
