Alabama officials say they're trying to banish substances that mimic marijuana

MONTGOMERY, Alabama
Dr. Don Williamson
The state health officer and district attorneys are looking for ways to ban products sold legally in Alabama that mimic marijuana.
State Health Officer Don Williamson held a public hearing in Montgomery about a chemically treated herbal product that is sold under brand names like "Spice" and "K2." Williamson said he's looking at whether the state health department can issue emergency rules. Leaders of the Alabama District Attorneys Association said they are working on a bill for the next session of the Legislature.
Steve and Lori Murphree of Anniston told Williamson that their 18-year-old son, Brandon, had a college scholarship waiting when he started smoking the legal product. They said he became agitated and angry and finally killed himself on July 3.
