Convicted child abuser back in jail facing a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges

Tuscumbia, Al.
Kim Gonzalez, who was convicted of child abuse in the 1993 death of her 5-year-old stepdaughter, is back in jail facing a variety of felony and misdemeanor charges.
Kim Gonzalez
Gonzalez, 39, 1050 Franklin 48, Russellville, is being held in Tuscumbia City Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Lortabs), second-degree promoting prison contraband, second-degree assault of a police officer, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest.
Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan said Gonzalez was brought to the city jail Wednesday morning after being arrested by Littleville police on a shoplifting charge. She was being held without bond late Wednesday.
Logan said she was taken to Colbert County Jail before she was transferred to Tuscumbia, which houses all female county prisoners.
Police said Gonzalez faces the additional charges after she fought with officers when they tried to get a controlled substance she snuck into the cell away from her.
Tuscumbia police Sgt. Stuart Setliff said Gonzalez was searched at the Colbert County Jail and then again when she got to Tuscumbia but somehow managed to get pills into her cell.
Setliff said Gonzalez spilled the pills on the floor. Officer Wes Holland, Capt. Jim Heffernan and a jailer went to the cell and saw her on the floor eating the pills, Setliff said.
“They stopped her and thought they had her under control but when she saw another pill laying on the cell floor, the officers said she dove, trying to eat it off the floor,” Setliff said.
He said Holland grabbed her, trying to stop her, and they struggled. She is accused of pulling him into the cell’s metal bed frame.
Logan said Holland slightly injured his arm but did not require medical attention.
Gonzalez and her ex-husband, Paul, were both charged with capital murder nearly 18 years ago in connection with the death of their daughter, Andrea.
Kim Gonzalez was found guilty of child abuse in May 1997. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, of which she served four years and three months.
Paul Gonzalez pleaded guilty to manslaughter in April 1997 as part of a plea agreement that included his testimony against his wife during the trial. He received a 10-year sentence and was required to serve two years in jail and two years on probation. After his release from jail, he moved back to his native Texas.
Andrea’s body has never been found.
She was reported missing from her Russellville home Nov. 20, 1993. A two-day search was called off when investigators suspected foul play. More than a year later, Kim Gonzalez told authorities Andrea had not disappeared but had died after she was accidentally scalded while taking a bath.
Kim Gonzalez told authorities she tossed the girl off the bridge and into the water at Mon Dye Bottoms Recreation Area near Phil Campbell.
