Former Mount Vernon policeman jailed after fatal head-on wreck near Citronelle

CITRONELLE, Al.
A former Mount Vernon police officer was charged today with murder in connection to a fatal head-on collision between his pickup truck and a car that killed a woman Saturday, Citronelle Police Chief Shane Stringer said.
Nicholas Williams Driver
Nicholas Williams Driver was taken today to Mobile County Metro Jail after treatment at University of South Alabama Medical Center for injuries suffered in the crash, Stringer said.
The name of the woman was not released pending notification of her relatives.
Driver was northbound on U.S. 45 north of Pleasant Circle about 12:56 p.m. Saturday when his pickup struck struck the woman's southbound car, Stringer said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police and medical personnel were unable to test Driver for an alcohol level at the scene, and Driver refused the test once he arrived at USAMC, Stringer said. He added that witness statements and other evidence at the scene indicated that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.
No one else was in either vehicle, he said.
According to Stringer, Driver is a former Mount Vernon police officer who left the force about 3-4 years ago. Records indicate that Driver graduated from the Southwest Alabama Police Academy in April 2004 and joined the Mount Vernon Police Department at that time. The circumstances that prompted him to leave the force were not immediately known, Stringer said.
