Scuffle with Hueytown police prompts attempted murder charge

HUEYTOWN, Al.
A Birmingham man has been charged with attempted murder, with police saying he attempted to take the gun of a Hueytown police officer during a traffic stop on Sunday.
Maurice Hamilton, 31, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail today.
According to Hueytown police, Hamilton was pulled over about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday along Davey Allison Boulevard because there was no tag on the vehicle he was driving. Hamilton gave a police officer false information and, as the officer attempted to pat him down, Hamilton ran into nearby woods. When the officer caught up to Hamilton, a fight began and Hamilton unsuccessfully attempted to pull the officer's gun out of its holster, police said.
Back-up arrived, and Hamilton was taken into custody, but only after resisting physically, police said. Two officers received minor injures and required medical attention, police said.
Hamilton was found in possession of 48 bags of marijuana and 42 rocks of crack cocaine, police said. He has been charged with attempted murder, possession and receipt of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana and giving false information to law enforcement.
His bond has been set at $86,500.
