2 special House elections in Birmingham area

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)
Some voters in the Birmingham area are going to the polls for two special elections for the Alabama House of Representatives.
Voters in House District 45 in portions of Jefferson and St Clair counties are choosing a successor Tuesday to the late Rep. Owen Drake of Leeds. Irondale Mayor Tommy Joe Alexander, Leeds businessman Dickie Drake and Irondale businessman Michael Sumners Jr. are competing in the Republican primary. The winner faces the lone Democratic candidate, Paige Parnell of Leeds.
Voters in House District 48 in portions of Jefferson and Shelby counties are choosing a replacement for Greg Canfield, who resigned to head the Alabama Development Office. Former Rep. Jim Carns of Vestavia Hills and Irondale City Councilman Craig Sanderson are running in the Republican primary. There is no Democratic candidate.
