Man freed in Talladega, Ala. murder case

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)
A 42-year-old Anniston man who had been held in the Talladega County Jail awaiting trial for murder is now free, and the state has agreed not to prosecute him.
John Ellis Chastain was charged with killing 26-year-old David Scott Hubbard of Munford. Hubbard was shot once in the head in July of 2009.
The Daily Home newspaper reports that former Talladega County Assistant District Attorney Barry Matson, who now works for the attorney general's office, says two witnesses have been jailed for hindering prosecution and one of them had also been charged with witness tampering.
He says it became clear from an investigation that Chastain did not commit the crime.
