Judge sets Alabama gambling retrial Oct. 3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP)
A federal judge plans to retry parts of Alabama's gambling corruption case starting Oct. 3.
A jury last week returned not guilty verdicts on 91 charges and could not reach a unanimous decision on 33 others.
The nine defendants were accused of buying and selling votes on legislation that would legalize electronic bingo games in the state.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson set the retrial date Monday after phone conversations with federal prosecutors and defense lawyers.
The Justice Department asked the judge to split the seven remaining defendants into three groups for retrial.
Some defense attorneys want one combined trial. Thompson plans to discuss that issue with attorneys again on Wednesday.
Two defendants were acquitted on all charges.
