Deputies question man in Center Point father's slaying

CENTER POINT, Alabama -- Jefferson County sheriff's deputies are questioning a man in connection with the Wednesday-night slaying of a Center Point man while he was unloading groceries.
"We got a small break in the case and have taken a person of interest into custody for questioning," Chief Deputy Randy Christian said. "Hopefully this will lead to solving this murder."
Tavarus Pledger, 35, died at St. Vincent's East, where family members had taken him following the shooting.
Witnesses and family members told Jefferson County sheriff's deputies Pledger had just arrived at his home in the 1500 block of Third Street Northwest and was unloading his car that he had parked in the driveway. Two men approached him, and multiple shots were fired.
Pledger's wife told her son to help his father get the groceries, and "the son walked out on the front porch and ran back inside and told his mother that his dad was being robbed," Christian said.
Pledger went into the home and told his wife he had been shot and needed to go to the hospital.
"This was cold blooded murder and I can't imagine a son and a wife having to see what they did," Christian said. "I am so sorry for this family. We will find out who the thugs were that did this and why and get this family justice."
