Some county license commissioners are worried that Alabama's new law cracking down on illegal immigration could cause longer lines for people coming to county courthouses to buy or renew vehicle tags.
License officials worry that a provision of the law requiring people to show proof of citizenship before buying or renewing tags will require citizens who now buy tags by mail or on the Internet to come to the courthouse. Officials say lines are already long at many county courthouses suffering from staffing issues because of budget shortfalls.
Republican Rep. Paul Sanford of Huntsville has said he plans to introduce a bill when the 2012 session begins in February that would allow people to submit copies of their licenses online or by mail when they renew their licenses.
