Alabama to unveil new, more secure driver licenses

MONTGOMERY, Alabama
Alabama's governor and public safety officials are planning to unveil the state's new driver's license program that's designed to comply with federal requirements for more secure identification.
Gov. Robert Bentley and officials of the Department of Public Safety will discuss the new program Thursday afternoon in Montgomery.
It's called STAR I.D., which stands for "Secure Trusted and Reliable."
Officials say the new STAR I.D. licenses won't be issued at probate judges' offices or license commissioners' offices like traditional licenses have been. They will only be issued only at driver license examining offices, and more than one form of identification will be required.
The new IDs will be available at driver license examining offices in Montgomery, Autauga and Chilton County beginning Oct. 3 and statewide after the first of the year.
