Birmingham Police: Beware of phony police officers

BIRMINGHAM, AL
It's a scheme you need to know about, robbers posing as Birmingham Police officers.
Police aren't saying where these robberies are happening, or how many times they happen, but they do want people to know it's going on and folks need to keep their guard up.
"We don't think they are in full uniform maybe T-shirts or similar gear," said Sgt. Johnny Williams with Birmingham Police.
Belinda Brewer manages MacCain Uniforms in Birmingham.  They sell uniforms and other police related items, but only to police officers. "They have to show us their commission card before they can purchase anything that has police, patches, or says police, sheriff," said Brewer.
Brewer says more than likely the imposters found their stuff online.  "They place an order and it's shipped to them," said Brewer.
Other police items are not hard to find. We found police attire, old badges, and a current Birmingham Police patch online. We found another website where you could actually purchase uniforms. "It's scary that it is so easy for people to get uniforms they are not supposed to get," said Brewer.
Sgt. Williams says people don't need to panic, just be aware. "If you are approached by someone just wearing a t-shirt that says police or ball cap and you have questions about it call police," said Sgt. Williams.
Anyone with information about these robberies is asked to call police.
