Bayou La Batre man injured in suspected meth lab explosion at his home and then arrested

BAYOU LA BATRE, Alabama
A suspected methamphetamine lab blew up in a home north of Bayou La Batre today, injuring a man and his dog, BLB police said. The man was later arrested on multiple charges.
The explosion took place about 9 a.m. in a home in the 12100 block of Shine Road in the Safe Harbor subdivision east of Alma Bryant High School south of Irvington, according to Bayou La Batre police detective Scott Dagg.
Lonnie Nix
Lonnie Nix, 45, was later arrested and charged with 2nd degree manufacture of a controlled substance, 1st-degree criminal mischief and possession of a short-barrel firearm, which Dagg said was a sawed-off shotgun.
Nix, who was injured in the explosion, was taken to Mobile County Metro Jail on bail totaling $13,500, according to jail records. Nix remained at the jail early this evening.
Dagg said that Nix's injuries were slight, and he was treated on the scene of his arrest without being taken to a hospital. Nix's chihuhua was also injured slightly in the blast. The dog was turned over to another family, Dagg said. The explosion did what Dagg said was about $35,000 in damage to the single-story wood frame home. The only exterior evidence of the explosion was a split-open corner of the house facing away from the street and part of the back wall's wood panels damaged.
Dagg said no one else was at the home when the explosion took place.
Nix will appear in Mobile County District Court Thursday morning, according to jail records.
